At the end of June 2008 I packed my two suitcases and moved to Bristol to work at BLC in the summer. Little did I know that 1st July would be the start of an 11-year professional journey with the school.
I feel that this period has been a fantastic chapter in my life not only in terms of personal changes but also in relation to my professional growth, as from a new addition to the Academic staff I have progressed to the position of a senior teacher/exam coordinator.
I have always perceived BLC as my second home. It is not just a workplace where you do the hours and cannot wait to leave but a place where I have met amazing people from all over the world and have made friends for life.
I have seen the school grow. When I first started it was a small school with only a few teachers making its mark in Bristol. Since then I’ve seen a rapid increase in numbers, technological development, refurbishment and the introduction of new and exciting projects.
They have all been positive changes that mean the school is at the vanguard of modern education. What matters to me the most, though, is the friendly atmosphere. Students are not just a number but the staff know them by their name and care about their wellbeing.
This personal touch is what makes BLC different from many competitors.
Some may wonder why I have never left. Well, if you love what you do, there is no need to look for a position elsewhere. BLC has allowed me to finish my Diploma, has encouraged me to specialise in the field of exams and has always given me freedom in teaching or creating my own resources.
I like the independence and creativity that is very often an integral part of teaching. I also enjoy talking to students, learning about them and their culture, trying out their national dishes when we have our International food parties. For me it is all about having good contact with people who choose BLC as their place to study.
I know it can be daunting for them to come abroad away from their family and friends. Therefore, it is so important to make their experience as enjoyable as possible making sure they are looked after so it can become a memorable experience for them for many years to come
