Lots of students come to the UK to learn English, and lots of young people come to the UK to work as Au Pairs for families.
Just over a year ago BLC launched the Demi Au Pair programme, which combines English tuition with Au Pairing duties. We have welcomed young people throughout the year from host countries such as Switzerland, Italy, France and Germany. We took some time to ask them what they feel they have gained from this unique opportunity.
It is a totally immersive language experience
Unlike a typical English language course, the mix of morning lessons and afternoon childcare for a family, means that you are fully immersed into the English language at all times. Looking after children provided non-stop English practice and a chance to really use your language skills in a typical English family environment.
“I loved the mix of morning English classes and Au Pair duties. The English was omnipresent and I quickly started to think and dream in English” - Helena 22.
You learn so much more about English than just the language
As an Au Pairs you play a central part in the family’s daily life. You get to experience a unique cultural exchange and learn about your host’s family life and community.
“Being an Au Pair has helped me integrate fully into my host family and I find it a really nice environment. I can speak freely around my hosts, and I feel like they have my best interests at heart. They really want me to improve my English.” - Maria 24
You develop self confidence and skills to help with future life
Studying English and living with an English family provides you so much more than just an opportunity to improve their English. It aids your personal development too. Working in a foreign country provides you with independence and confidence and new skills that you can use in your future career.
“I’ve learnt a lot about myself. I’ve learnt to find solutions in unfamiliar situations, to fend for myself and have developed more self-confidence.” - Henry, 21
On top of all of this, being an Au Pair, living with a local family and studying at a local English Language school is fun. You get to meet and become friends with other students from across the world, enjoy a social programme designed to show you the best of the UK and live with a lovely family.
“The best way to learn English is be in the field and for me, going abroad attending an English school as BLC and staying with an English host family who has children, it has been one of the best experiences in my life.” - Stephanie, 22
